I decided to try crocheting a cornucopia this year for Thanksgiving. And I finished just in time! To have missed it. To be fair, I started like 2 days before. My 10 year old wanted me to make one so she could sew some fruits and vegetables to spill from it. She changed her mind and instead we stuffed it with little hearts she likes making. She’s made them in varied patterns and designs and themes and enjoys adding small faces and decorations to them, as in two of the above.
This came together relatively quickly once I figured out where we were going with it. I bought a pattern on Etsy this time. I probably could have figured out how to make one myself but, as mentioned, I started late so I decided to not take the time that experimenting requires. I liked this pattern because it had more texture. I may have messed with it anyway since I worked it with two threads of yarn at once instead of one. I like the added stiffness and texture that gives but I’m not entirely convinced it came out the way I’d hoped. I think it works pretty well though and I’ll be adding it to my Thanksgiving decor for next year.
I like cornucopias and harvest and food decorations for Thanksgiving usually because I like to consider Thanksgiving as a holiday for celebration of bounty. Taking time to reflect, gather family, gratitude for the bounty of the earth. I prefer it over pilgrims and Native Americans because I keep feeling like those depictions have a tendency to ignore the terrible treatment the Native Americans later received at the hands of the pilgrims. But a harvest celebration is something that many cultures across the globe have developed for similar reasons. Life can be hard but as we came together we made it through another year, and we can do the same next year. Hence my preference for the symbols of plenty and bounty.
I didn’t actually get my decorations out this year- in my defense, I spent a lot of the month barred from lifting heavy things. It’s also kind of a lot to do Halloween then Thanksgiving then Christmas- the house goes through a lot of change the last few months of the year. I’m not one who’ll pull out Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving (but immediately after? Yes.), but to those who complain about the early advent of Christmas songs and carols, I have this response- Figure out some catchy Thanksgiving songs before you start complaining, thanks. 😀
