Backdrop of rolling countryside with pale blue sky. A post-and-rail fence crosses the lower half and a weathered post with directional signs takes foreground. On one brown plank, a black arrow points right and says "Trail."

Ah villanelles. We’re back. I had a shower-thought of the two lines this poem focuses on and as I rolled them in my head I realized that the point they want, if I don’t intend to write a whole page on it, is best enforced with a repeating structure.
…like, well, villanelles.
…like I complained about earlier when I started this whole endeavor.

But I suppose it was inevitable I come back to the villains sooner or later, especially given the intro to my poetry month, so it looks like it’s sooner.

Anyway, here goes nothing. (As always, yeah sure these would be better if I took the time to edit but that’s not the point. yet.)

Your Path

You can do anything you want,
And yet in balance comes this strife,
You can’t do everything you want.

Be an artist, singer, astronaut,
Activist, storekeeper, husband, wife,
You can do anything you want.

Yet as if life wants to taunt,
Each thing you choose with loss is rife,
You can’t do everything you want.

Don’t let the price of entry daunt;
If it’s your dream, make it your life.
You can do anything you want.

Yet know each choice removes some jaunt,
Some other goal, some other life.
You can’t do everything you want.

So use your brains, don’t with folly flaunt.
Choose with care like surgeon’s knife-
You can do anything you want;
Yet can’t do everything you want.

  1. I like these thoughts, as I admit to frustration at the “anything”; I still can’t become an apple, or a horse, or 😉
    But the options of what I can do are basically limitless!
    (Don’t need to post this :D)

  2. Doing anything doesn’t prevent you from the consequences of it, and just because we don’t have infinite resources, we still try to do it all.
    This so needs to be in your collected works and is a keeper.
