Building a Character

Building blocks and toy bulldozers scooping candy against a black background

Remember way back when, the time I shared the character sheets I made? I’m going to fill out one or two with a random character. To get the character, I went to HeroForge.com and hit randomize on species and outfit, then kind of tried randomizing with eyes closed and wiggling the mouse for coloration and pose. Now that I have my guy:

It’s time to drill down into this fellow. I’m going to basically copy the categories to below so it’s searchable and not a pdf.

Name: Sir Perys Grathlethorn
Book: Willows and Wildlings (Like Wind in the Willows but also swashbuckling in jungles)
Unique Traits: His purple eyes are rare in general but common in his family. He also tends to have a bristly mustache.

Skin: Pinkish; Hair: Cream and White; Eyes: Purple; Age: 18 which is older for mice; Gender: Male

Fear: Being seen as a coward. Change? Only a little. He’ll have to be seen as a coward and then get over his embarrassment to face the same trial again.
Wound: First expeditionary leader was absolutely terrible and got half their unit killed in a preventable accident. Will never be that way himself. Change? No.
Goal: Chart the uncharted, map the unmapped, explore the unexplored, document the undocumented, disperse knowledge. Change? No.
Lie: I’m the best at doing this still. Change? Yes; accepts more help. Admits he’s getting older and needs to accept aid and also pass on his experience.
Flaw: Becoming set in his ways. Change? Yes; see above.
Secret: Huge crush on his childhood friend but she’s married so he keeps it to himself. Change? Yes, finally finds another interest, doesn’t expose his affection but the attitude changes.

Quirk: Learned a lot of field fixes and likes to reuse equipment in odd ways in the wilds.
General Outlook: The world is full of strange things but none of them are inexplicable with appropriately applied investigation! Nothing’s too strange or scary to be worth ignoring or overlooking.
Change in attitude with emotions?: Gets very huffy/shouty when upset, when actually enraged gets icy cold and trembly. Also gets huffy/shouty when excited, when overjoyed also goes still and misty-eyed.
Family Situation: Comes from an older gentry line but uses the money for knowledge dissemination. Relations used to this as he’s pretty much done the same since he was young. Two sisters, one a society butterfly and the other a loud opinionated bookseller by choice. Parents passed of old age. No kids but 8 nieces and nephews, most of whom find him the awesome uncle with the amazing stories.
Character Relationships: Beyond family and childhood crush, many good adventuring buddies and a few that he’s coolly cordial to but finds them pompous blowhards who shouldn’t be in charge of a potted plant. Good terms with suppliers and many academic rodents as well.
Strengths: His ability to ask experts and take their advice when he knows he doesn’t have the experience; leadership and risk assessment; compassion

Orientation: Hetero-normal
Ethnicity: Vaguely European but also field mouse
Disabilities?: Starting to have some aches and old-aged-ness but nothing specific

Other Notes: Very inspired by old English colonels but I want the research and exploration to be less colonial. IF he ends up in a place that’s already inhabited, he learns from the locals and does not consider himself above, also pays well for their information and acknowledges their contributions and knowledge in his published work.

Wealth scale: About 2/3 up between Middle Class and Extreme Wealth

Well, hope that was fun for you! I enjoyed it.
