Today is my youngest’s birthday and her party. It’s nice that I don’t have to aim for a weekend since she’s smack dab in the middle of Christmas/Winter Break (depending how secular your school wants to be). And for her birthday, we’re going to do something I’ve wanted to do for a kid’s birthday for a while. Life size CandyLand.
Hopefully I’ve gotten all the props together by now otherwise be glad you can’t see a picture of my current emotional state. I’m going to make use of the cards I made for my mom, printed larger for the event. I also ordered some inflatable candy canes to make a forest, a tree bookshelf that’s also the kid’s gift to festoon with cakes, there’s going to be a lollipop forest, I think the gumdrop mountains are going to be tussocks of bean bags and stuff covered in cloth, and a construction paper path. Hopefully I can make use of some of the boxes I’ve got lying around for some strange reason to make a peanut brittle cottage and a castle. Those are the plans as laid out several weeks prior to this publishing.
But one other thing I do have down already is the music! I built a candy playlist on Pandora, relatively carefully vetted the songs, and now I’m gonna tell you what I ended up with. I didn’t choose every song I could find with sugar or candy or so forth in the title or lyrics because, well, it’s a kid’s party and I don’t need anything really suggestive. And I got:
- There’s a Great Big Candy Roundup by Riders in the Sky
- Lollipop by The Chordettes
- Sugar, Sugar by The Archies
- Big Rock Candy Mountain by The Okee Dokee Brothers
- Sugar Pie by Ella Fitzgerald
- Candy Man by Mary Jane Girls
- The Candy Man by Sammy Davis Jr.
- Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows by Lesley Gore
- Sweets for My Sweet by The Drifters
- Candy Girl by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
- I Want Candy by Bow Wow Wow
- Good Ship Lollipop by The Great Kids Crew1
- A Spoonful of Sugar from the Mary Poppins Soundtrack
- Peppermint Twist by Joey Dee & the Starliters
- Sugar Rush from the Wreck-It Ralph Soundtrack
- Soda Pop from the K-Pop Demon Hunters Soundtrack
- I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bun) by The Four Tops
- Cotton Candy Land by Elvis Presley
Hopefully having these on shuffle for the whole party will provide enough variety to not feel too repetitive. If you have ideas for more songs, well, it’s TOO LATE. The party is TODAY. You should have thought of it WEEKS AGO and told me then! Sheesh. But if anyone else is doing a CandyLand-themed party, feel free to steal my work! 😉

- Yes, Shirley Temple is the original. Not all of these are by the original. I think Shirley Temple is cute but I don’t typically listen to her versions. They’re… a little too saccharine for me and yes I know that’s ironic given the content of this playlist. ↩︎
I know, too late for this party, but others might benefit from the collection and additions here
Hard Candy Christmas by Dolly Parton
and of course you need at least one commercial, with:
– Cracker Jacks “Candy-Coated Popcorn, Peanuts and a Prize ”
– Almond Joy/ Mounds
It was a fantabulous party!
